Central track and field squads ranked 15th, 22nd

Women's track | April 25, 2012

PELLA—The Central College men’s and women’s track and field squads are ranked 15th and 22nd respectively in the fifth week of power rankings produced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The latest release marks the first set of rankings that rely solely on 2012 performances. Previous rankings were a combination of a squad’s best marks from the current season as well as 2011 performances. McMurray (Texas) still holds the top spot in the men’s rankings while Iowa Conference foe Wartburg retained the No. 1 ranking for the women.

Teams are scored using a points system that objectively measures the top performances across the country in each event.

The men’s and women’s squads won a combined 18 events at the Central Open April 21. No team scores were kept. The Dutch will send athletes to the Drake Relays in Des Moines and Kip Janvrin Invitational in Indianola this week.

Central has three entries in the men’s decathlon Wednesday and Thursday at Drake, including defending Division III champion Ethan Miller (senior, Seymour). The men’s and women’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay prelims are slated to run Friday with the finals Saturday. The men’s 4x200 and 4x800 relays will also run Friday, while the men’s sprint medley and distance medley relays will be contested Saturday. A group of throwers will compete Thursday at the Kip Janvrin Invitational and the majority of the squad will compete Friday.
