Eight Iowa Conference championships

PELLA — Led by freshman transfer Taylor Hill (Treynor), the Central College women’s golf team surged to an 11-stroke lead after the opening round of the Central Spring Invitational Friday at Bos Landen Golf Club.
Hill carded a 7-over-par 79 and leads the individual race by one stroke. The Dutch shot 345 and are followed by Luther College in second with 356. Grinnell College is third (375), Simpson College fourth (388) and Des Moines Area CC fifth (389).
“Taylor had a great day but the rest of the golfers feel like can improve their scores, especially since we’re on our home course,” coach Tim Wilkinson said. “We play this course a lot and the scores didn’t reflect that today.”
Sarah Paulson (senior, Ottumwa) is tied for third with 85 while Ali Miller (senior, Davenport, North HS) is tied for sixth with 89. Ashley Smith (junior, Johnsburg, Ill.) is tied for 12th (92) and Kaurie Kincaid (junior, Knoxville) is tied for 18th (96). Competing as individuals, Kelsey Van Tasell (freshman, Pella) is also tied for 12th (92) and Karissa Rempe (freshman, Pella) is tied for 26th (101).
The 41-player field endured a cold and windy start.
“We were almost halfway through the round before the sun came out and it started to warm up,” Wilkinson said. “It wasn’t an easy day to start.”
Central aims to improve its short game for Saturday’s final round, which begins at 9 a.m.
“Our chipping and putting has to be better,” Wilkinson said. “We’re not going to hit every shot exactly where we want, but if we don’t chip and putt well we’re going to get punished.”
