Central men’s tennis team stumbles at home

PELLA — The Central College men’s tennis team couldn’t hold back Iowa Conference leader Coe College Saturday as the Kohawks handed the Dutch a 9-0 shutout at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts.

“We’re not that far away from Coe but they outplayed us today,” said coach Steve Tyler. “I tip my hat to them. They’re a disciplined, serious tennis team.”

Tim Kahl (freshman, Grinnell) and John Seier (sophomore, Lincoln, Neb., Waverly HS) led late in the No. 3 doubles match, but couldn’t find the finishing spark.

“We played really well at No. 3 doubles,” said Tyler. “We were up 6-3 but couldn’t seal the deal. We were serving for the match, 7-6, and Coe beat us 9-7. John and Tim really played a fine match and they’re turning into a nice doubles team.”

Tyler said he was pleased with Central's effort across the lineup. He highlighted Kyle Freischlag (sophomore, Downers Grove, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and Collin Schares (freshman, Johnston) in singles action. Freischlag was upended 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match while Schares fell 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 3 match.

“We battled well up and down,” said Tyler. “Kyle battled and Colin was pretty close at 3 singles.”

The loss drops Central to 10-9 while Coe climbs to 18-4.

The Dutch host Grand View University and league opponent Cornell College beginning 9 a.m. April 21 at Pella. It will be Central’s final outing before the Iowa Conference Team Championship May 4-5 at Iowa City.
