Central men’s golf team pulls away for home tourney win

Men's golf | April 7, 2012

PELLA — Sharing the lead going into Saturday’s final round, the Central College men’s golf team pulled away in the rain for a 16-stroke victory at the Central Spring Invitational.

The Dutch carded 309-300—609 on the par-72 Bos Landen Golf Club. The University of Dubuque followed at 309-316—625 while Luther College placed third at 318-308—626.

The 14-team field endured rain throughout the day.

“I think we just stayed mentally focused,” coach Chad Green said. “It started raining pretty hard with about eight to six holes left and we knew what to expect. We knew we had to hit putts and be able to get up and down because in the rain, you aren’t going to hit a lot of greens and you aren’t going to hit a lot of fairways You’re going to have some wayward shots.”

Central’s Brent Messmore (senior, Hudson) took runner-up honors at 77-72—149. Dubuque’s Eric Wolfe won the individual race at 73-72—145.

“Brent Messmore shot 1-over-par today, which is a great score any day at Bos, but especially in the rain,” Green said. “I’m really proud of how he finished out the tournament, as well as Justin Livingston (junior, Winterset). He also played pretty well considering the conditions.”

Livingston finished fourth at 77-74—151 and Brent Goodenow (senior, Johnston) placed fifth at 74-78—152. Matt Vegter (senior, Morrison, Ill.) tied for 15th at 82-76—158 and Adam Squires (freshman, Waterloo, Columbus HS) tied for 31st at 82-82—163.

“We finished well, which is something we didn’t do well yesterday,” Green said. “To shoot 300 at Bos any day is good, but especially in the conditions they played in today.”

Central’s second unit, the White team, finished seventh at 326-319—645. The Black squad followed in eighth (325-328—653) and the Grey squad finished 14th (339-344—683).

It’s the third straight tournament win for Central. The Dutch take on the Augustana College (Ill.) Invitational April 13-14, played at the Pinnacle Country Club in Milan, Ill.
