PELLA — Freshman Anna Striegel (Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) captured two wins but the Central College women’s tennis team fell short against Northwestern (Iowa) Saturday, suffering a 5-4 setback.

Striegel teamed with Emily Koontz (freshman, Council Bluffs, Abraham Lincoln HS) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-1 victory before claiming a come-from-behind win at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0.

After a tight 9-7 defeat at No. 2 doubles, Sarah Montgomery (freshman, Bettendorf) battled back at No. 5 singles, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Blake Taylor (sophomore, Tama, South Tama HS) won at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

“Ultimately what won it for Northwestern (3-8 overall) was their mental edge in close situations,” assistant coach Nick Rohner said. “It’s a tough loss. We played really well up and down the lineup.”

Rohner said the tight matches will eventually go Central’s way.

“I feel like we keep coming back and saying we’re a young team,” he said. “We’re working on the mental part of the game in practice and we’re just waiting for the close matches to tip our direction.”

Central (8-12 overall, 2-3 spring) has its last outing of the nontraditional spring season April 10, facing Simpson College (8-8 overall, 0-1 spring) at Indianola at 4 p.m.
