Pulliam shuts out Loras in complete game

Baseball | March 30, 2012

DUBUQUE — Senior Joel  Pulliam (Des Moines, Lincoln HS) struck out 12 batters and gave up just four hits for the Central College baseball in a 5-0 complete game shutout of Iowa Conference foe Loras College Friday night.

“Joel was on top of his game tonight,” said coach Adam Stevens. “He had everything working. It was fun to watch him compete like that.”

The win earns Pulliam a 4-0 record on the season and Central was error free for the game.

Offensively, the Dutch accumulated eight hits. Center fielder Sam Stetzel (junior, Perry) scored two runs, going 2-for-5 at the plate with one RBI. Shortstop Mike Furlong (senior, Davenport, Assumption HS) was 2-for-5 and drove in two RBIs.

Stetzel scored in the first inning off a Furlong single to right field, opening the scoring for the Dutch. In the fifth, a Max Seeman (catcher, senior, Panora, Panorama HS) single allowed designated hitter Jace Ahrendsen (sophomore, Clarence, North Cedar HS) to score from third and two batters later first baseman Seth Carson (junior, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) scored on a Stetzel ground out.

Right fielder Allen Mann (junior, Marshalltown) found home plate on a fielding error in the sixth and Central wrapped up the scoring in the seventh when a Furlong single drove in Stetzel once again.

“We had some timely hitting and scored a couple two-out runs, which is always good,” said Stevens.

Central (14-3, 4-0 conference) and Loras (8-9, 0-4 conference) face off in doubleheader action Saturday at Dubuque. The opener is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the nightcap to follow.

“Tomorrow is a new day,” said Stevens. “We have a good start to the weekend, but we’ll come out ready to compete again tomorrow.”
