18 top-three league team finishes in past 31 years
PELLA — In its spring season home opener, the Central College women’s tennis team swept Grand View University 9-0 Tuesday.
Anna Striegel (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) paired with Emily Koontz (freshman, Council Bluffs, Abraham Lincoln HS) for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles before shutting out her No. 4 singles opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Two other freshmen, Sarah Montgomery (Bettendorf) and Jordan Langer (Verona, Wis.), won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
“It was good to see those four freshmen come out and take care of business like they did,” coach Steve Tyler said. “It’s encouraging to see their growth and effort create victories for the team.”
Riley Taylor (senior, Tama, South Tama HS) captured the No. 1 singles win, 6-0, 6-1, while Chelsea Johnson (junior, Mount Vernon) claimed the No. 2 victory. Ashlei Bos (freshman, Weatherby Lake, Mo., Park Hill HS) and Blake Taylor (sophomore, Tama, South Tama HS) won at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.
“It was a windy day and often that equalizes tennis teams,” Tyler said. “I thought our women stayed focused and battled hard to consequently sweep Grand View (0-3).”
Central (8-11 overall, 2-2 spring) picked up two wins by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
