PELLA--Did Central's women's basketball team actually beat the buzzer twice in Saturday's comeback overtime victory over Wartburg College? Maybe not, but it sure was close. Judge for yourself.
The Dutch staged a stunning rally from an 11-point deficit in the final 2:18. Then Kelsey Schuring (senior, Pella) knocked down a 3-pointer that would have won it in regulation. But after conferring, officials ruled it was released after the buzzer.
So Central pulled off another comeback in the overtime after falling behind by five points. Wartburg pulled ahead 82-80 on two free throws with 5.6 seconds left. Central ended up with the ball at midcourt with 2.6 seconds left when the Dutch set up a play for guard Sarah Paulson (senior, Ottumwa). But the pass eluded Paulson's grasp and bounced into the hands of forward AJ Baker (senior, Grinnell), who turned and fired the game-winning 3 as time elapsed. That left Central 83-82 victors in their season finale, giving first-year coach Mike Jacobsma's team a huge springboard for the 2012-13 campaign.
The opening day of practice is less than eight months away.
