Central men’s basketball team rocks Simpson

Men's basketball | Feb. 15, 2012

PELLA—The Central College men’s basketball team was clicking on all cylinders Wednesday, toppling Simpson College 81-57.

The Dutch, avenging an earlier Iowa Conference loss to Simpson, shot a fiery 57.9 percent from the floor while limiting the Storm (11-12 overall, 8-7 conference) to 36.5 percent and matching Simpson's lowest offensive effort of the season.

“We played as close to 40 minutes of good basketball as we’ve played all year,” coach Mike Boschee said. “We’re continuing to get better and making fewer and fewer mistakes as the season goes on, which are signs of a team that’s engaged and successful.”

Central (17-7 overall, 9-6 conference) jumped to a 14-8 lead five minutes into the game with a 7-0 burst and was up 37-29 at halftime. The Dutch opened the second half reeling off nine unanswered points, which pushed the Central advantage to 17. Simpson was never closer than 14 points the rest of the game.

“Anytime you put doubt in an opponent’s mind early is a good thing,” Boschee said.

The Dutch hit 60.7 percent from the field in the second half and shot 36.8 from long distance for the game. Central outscored Simpson 42-24 in the paint and held a 35-32 rebounding edge.

Guard Demarco Turner (senior, Des Moines, East HS) led four players in double digits with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Forward Jacob Winkler (junior, Lancaster, Mo., Schuyler R-1 HS) had 14 points and seven rebounds while guard Brock Caves (senior, Douds, Van Buren HS) had 13 points, sinking 7-of-7 at the free-throw line, and six rebounds. Guard Nick Marinkovich (junior, Clarendon Hills, Ill., Hinsdale Central HS) chipped in 11 points and forward Jack Bruns (senior, Story City, Roland-Story HS) grabbed seven rebounds.

Central wraps up the regular season Saturday, hosting Wartburg College in a women’s-men’s doubleheader at 2 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Dutch edged the Knights earlier this season, 76-69. Wartburg is 11-13 overall and 5-10 in the league coming off a 67-55 setback to Coe College.

A video webcast and live stats will be available for both games through Central’s website at www.central.edu/athletics. The games will also be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) with Eric Gotschall providing the play-by-play.
