2014 NCAA Div. III tournament qualifier
PELLA—Central College junior forward Jacob Winkler (Lancaster, Mo., Schuyler R-1 HS) is the Iowa Conference male athlete of the week.
Meanwhile, junior Felicia Coleman (junior, Houston, Texas, J. Frank Dobie HS) is the league women’s track events performer of the week for indoor track and field.
Winkler led the men’s basketball team to two victories last week, coming off the bench to average 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 62.5 percent from the floor. He had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 90-87 victory over Loras and posted his fourth double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds, both career bests, in a 77-74 double-overtime win over Luther. It’s the first time Winkler has been cited.
Central is 16-7 overall with an 8-6 league mark and has two regular season games remaining. The Dutch have already clinched a spot in the six-team league tournament beginning next Tuesday.
Coleman received women’s track events MVP distinction at the Grinnell College Darren Young Classic. She won the 200 meters (26.27 seconds) and took runner-up honors in the 60 meters (7.95), just four-hundredths of a second off her school record. Coleman also anchored the third-place 4x400 relay (4:07.61).
The Dutch travel to Iowa City Friday for the Univ. of Iowa Inv., their final tune-up before the indoor league championships Feb. 24-25 at Cornell College.
