CEDAR RAPIDS—The offensive woes continued for the Central College men’s basketball team as Coe College edged the Dutch 57-50 in Iowa Conference play Wednesday night.

The Dutch (12-6 overall, 5-5 conference) were held to their lowest point total of the season, hitting a chilly 30 percent from the floor and connecting on just 4-of-25 shots from behind the arc.

“We’re not able to put the ball in the hole right now,” coach Mike Boschee said. “We’re in a little bit of a funk and we’ve been in it longer than anybody wants.”

Central, mustering a 9-1 run, grabbed a 19-11 lead with 3:59 left in the first half, only to have Coe reel off nine unanswered points and go up 20-19 at the break. The Kohawks jumped to a 51-43 advantage, making another nine-point run, with 1:19 remaining in the game. The Dutch battled back and were within three points with 26 seconds left but were forced to foul, sending Coe to the free-throw line.

“Our defense kept us in the game,” Boschee said. “We played with a lot of intensity and it gave us a chance to win.”

Forward Chris Lehmann (senior, Champaign, Ill., Central HS) had 15 points and guards Brock Caves (senior, Douds, Van Buren HS) and Kevin Kaerwer (sophomore, El Paso, Texas, John L. Chapin HS) each had seven. Lehmann, Caves and forward Jack Bruns (senior, Story City, Roland-Story HS) collected seven rebounds apiece.

The Kohawks (13-6 overall, 7-3 conference) outrebounded Central 36-35 and shot 32 percent from the floor. Coe was 19-of-21 (90.5 percent) at the free-throw line.

Central regroups for a women’s-men’s doubleheader against Buena Vista University Saturday at Storm Lake. The women tip off at 6 p.m. while the men begin at 8 p.m. The Beavers enter the matchup at 10-8 overall and 6-3 in the league, snagging an 83-77 win over Wartburg College Wednesday. The Dutch topped Buena Vista 74-66 in their previous meeting Nov. 30 at Pella.

Both games will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) with Eric Gotschall calling the play-by-play. The broadcast can also be accessed through Central’s website at www.central.edu/athletics or through www.kniakrls.com.
