Central wins three at Florida wrestling duals

Wrestling | Dec. 18, 2011

FORT MYERS, FLA.—Senior Tommy Van Renterghem (Oskaloosa) produced four wins Sunday, leading the Central College wrestling squad to a 3-1 finish at the Florida Gulf Coast Duals.

The Dutch fell to Southern Maine 21-18 in the opening matchup but bounced back, edging the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) 19-16 before rolling past Concordia (Wis.) 37-10 and topping Iowa Conference foe Buena Vista 28-12.

“We definitely got better as the day went on,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “We were aggressive and our conditioning showed. That’s something we pride ourselves in and our wrestlers won some of the tough matches later in the day because that.”

Van Renterghem posted three decisions and a pin at 174 pounds, improving to 9-6.

“Tommy had four tough matches but he really stepped up and showed some senior leadership,” Van Kley said. “The match he recorded the pin in was tied at one point but he fired back at the end.”

Van Kley also highlighted 125-pounder Daniel Page (freshman, Yelm, Wash., Tumwater HS) and 141-pounder Carlos Hernandez (sophomore, Phoenix, Ariz., Tolleson HS). Page split at 2-2 but outlasted fourth-ranked Austin Mogg of Buena Vista in a 3-2 decision. Hernandez was 1-3, recording a crucial pin over Buena Vista’s Steve Gutschenritter at the two minute and 59 seconds mark.

“Both of those wrestlers, along with Tommy, epitomized our efforts today,” Van Kley said. “Daniel got a hard-fought 3-2 victory against a quality, ranked opponent. And Carlos deserves all the praise in the world. He's worked through a tough shoulder injury so it was his first chance wrestling today. He had a huge come-from-behind victory against Buena Vista.”

Jake Crawford (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) recorded three pins at 285 pounds to finish 3-1 on the day and improve to 10-5 overall. Also going 3-1 were Ryan Davis (junior, Northwood, La., Northwood HS) at 149 pounds and Joseph Atwell (junior, Jamaica, Panorama HS) at 157 pounds.

After some Florida sightseeing and a break for the holidays, Central (5-4) returns to the mat Jan. 7 for the Knox (Ill.) Duals at Galesburg, Ill.
