Seven national top-10 team finishes
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — One night’s rest proved insufficient for the Central College wrestling team as the Dutch were bested by St. Olaf College (Minn.) 24-15 Friday, following Thursday night’s double-dual action.
Central started the night with a strong bid, before the Oles rallied. Freshman Daniel Page (Yelm, Wash. Tumwater HS) kept his momentum from two Thursday victories, notching a 7-6 decision in the 125-pound bout. Sophomore Kalen Greiner (Keota) and senior Josh Atwell (Jamaica, Perry HS) followed suit with a 5-3 decision at 133 pounds and a 16-4 major decision at 157 pounds, respectively.
“We had hard matches early and really gutted it out to get wins,” said coach Eric Van Kley. “Josh had one of the best efforts of the night. He was facing a talented opponent and really battled for the major decision”
But as the night wore on, St. Olaf pins gave the Oles the team advantage.
“We made too many mental mistakes and gave up three pins,” said Van Kley. “We had opportunities in those matches; we were winning when we got pinned. You can’t win a dual that way.”
Also earning wins for the Dutch were junior Ryan Davis (Northwood, La.) with a 3-2 decision at 157 pounds and freshman Tyler Lowy (Phoenix, Ariz. Thunderbird HS) with a 6-4 decision at 184 pounds.
Central falls to 2-3 while St. Olaf climbs to 4-1 with the win.
Central takes nine days off while taking care of final exams before traveling to Fort Myers, Fla., for the Gulf Coast Duals Dec. 18. The Dutch will face Southern Maine, Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.), Concordia (Wis.) and Iowa Conference foe Buena Vista.
