MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—The Central College wrestling team saw improvement in its second week of competition, producing 12 placewinners at the Auggie-Brute-adidas Open at Augsburg College (Minn.) Saturday.

With over 330 wrestlers competing in the non-scored tournament, the field was divided into three divisions based largely on experience level.

“Overall it was another pretty balanced effort,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “We were aggressive on our feet and on the mat and made big improvements from last Saturday to this Saturday.”

Finishing second in the Silver Division, the middle bracket, was TJ Peretti (sophomore, Auburn, Wash., Auburn Mountainview HS) at 141 pounds and Dan Gordon (senior, Anchorage, Alaska, Diamond HS) at 184 pounds. Both wrestlers finished 3-1 and Peretti recorded a pin in the semifinal (4:00).

“Dan’s only in his second season at Central and he’s off to a good start this year,” Van Kley said. “He’s placed in both tournaments this season and that’s encouraging to see.”

Taking third in Silver Division was Daniel Page (freshman, Yelm, Wash., Tumwater HS) at 125 pounds, Caleb Cejka (freshman, Goffstown, N.H., Goffstown HS) at 165 pounds and Jake Crawford (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) at 285 pounds. Page posted two pins en route to a 3-1 record, including a 48-second fall for the third-place match victory. Cejka went 2-1, recording a 5:43 pin for third place. Crawford was 3-1, winning all three matches by decision.

“Jake and TJ are back in the lineup after being out with the flu and they both had nice showings for their first tournaments of the year.”

Joseph Atwell (junior, Jamaica, Panorama HS) finished sixth in the Gold Division, the top bracket, with a 2-2 record. Dillon Anderson (freshman, Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS) finished second in the Bronze Division at 3-1. Tyler Lowy (freshman, Phoenix, Ariz., Thunderbird HS) placed fifth in the Silver Division at 3-2.

“Dillon, Caleb, and Daniel all had strong showings in their weight classes as younger wrestlers,” Van Kley said.

The Dutch had four seventh-place finishers. Colten Moore (junior, West Burlington) closed the tournament with a pin (:58) at 165 pounds in the Gold Division, finishing 3-1. In the Silver Division Alex Wright (sophomore, Wilton, Durant HS) was 3-1 at 141 pounds, Zach Beekman (senior, Pocahontas) was 3-1, recording a fall (1:48) in the seventh-place match at 157 pounds, and Sam Apland (freshman, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) was 2-1 at 174 pounds.

Van Kley said the goal is to get better each week.

“We want to continue to make steady strides in the right direction and with the wrestlers’ work ethic and positive attitude it’s definitely something we’re capable of doing.”

Central breaks for Thanksgiving and returns to the mat Dec. 1 for its home debut and conference opener against No. 1 Wartburg College at 7 p.m. in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

“Thanksgiving comes at a nice time and we’ll use the break to get healthier,” Van Kley said. “But we’re looking forward to getting the conference season started.”
