Central wrestling team edges past Wheaton

Wrestling | Nov. 15, 2011

WHEATON, ILL.—Theron Stewart (junior, Marshalltown) prevailed in the second-to-last match to spur the Central College wrestling team to a 21-17 win over Wheaton College (Ill.) Tuesday night.

Trailing 15-17 heading into the 197-pound match, Stewart outlasted Darren Faber 6-5 to ensure a Central win.

“Theron won a tight match against Wheaton’s best wrestler to seal the deal for us,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “To get a win like that is three years of hard work in the making and it’s great to see him reap the rewards of his effort.”

Freshman Daniel Page (Yelm, Wash., Tumwater HS) set the tone early for the Dutch, pinning his opponent in 3 minutes, 30 seconds at 125 pounds.

“Daniel was big for us tonight,” Van Kley said. “He had a great night to get us started off well and get things going.”

Central jumped to a 12-3 advantage with a victory by forfeit at 141 pounds. At 157, the Dutch notched an 8-5 decision by Joseph Atwell (junior, Jamaica, Panorama HS) and Jake Crawford (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) closed the match with a 5-4 decision at heavyweight.

“We had a strong effort from top to bottom and battled at all 10 weights,” Van Kley said. “It’s great to get the first win, especially when it results from such a hard-fought effort.”

Central heads to Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday for the Auggie-Brute-adidas Open at Augsburg College, starting at 9 a.m. The non-scored tournament is split into divisions separated by experience levels.

“There will be some stiff competition but we’ll also be able to get our younger wrestlers some experience,” Van Kley said. “It’s a great chance for everyone on the team to compete and get a lot of matches.”
