Central’s Fooshee, Kleis on academic squad

Men's soccer | Nov. 4, 2011

PELLA—Central College’s Garrett Fooshee (Derby, Kan.) and Alex Kleis (Pella) have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Division III men’s and women’s soccer teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Fooshee, a senior defender, is a first-team selection. He carries a 3.80 grade point average with an exercise science major. Fooshee has started every game the past two years, helping the Dutch post 14 shutouts and compile a 23-13-1 record. Fooshee advances to the national ballot, to be voted on next week, for academic all-America honors.

A senior defender for the women’s squad, Kleis is a second-team honoree. The team co-captain has a 3.77 GPA with an exercise science major. Kleis has started all but three games in her career and has been instrumental in the program turnaround. This year the Dutch won more games by Sept. 18 than the last three years combined and their 10 season wins are the program’s third-highest season total.

Both Fooshee and Kleis are recognized in District VIII. The Academic All-America program expanded its format for 2011-12 from honoring student-athletes in two categories, university and college, to four teams, Divisions I, II, III and a college division that includes NAIA, Canadian institutions and two-year student-athletes.
