LA CROSSE, WIS. — The Central College volleyball squad earned two wins at the Wis.-La Crosse Invitational Friday night, avenging an Iowa Conference defeat against Loras College 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 29-27, 15-13 and besting Wis.-Superior 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18.

Facing the Duhawks (9-20, 4-4 conference) in the early match, freshman outside hitter Sara Snead (Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) lead the offensive attack with 12 kills on 34 attempts. Right-side hitter Caitlin Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS), middle hitter Ashley Pederson (junior, Humboldt) and outside hitter Amy Golly (senior, Ankeny) followed with 10 each.

Defensively, libero Chelsea Grieger (senior, Pella) added to her school-record career digs mark, notching 31 on the night.

It was the third time in as many weeks the teams had faced, with the home teams trading victories in first two matches.

“It was good to get a neutral court win,” said coach Kent Clayberg. “It wasn’t always pretty but we played a gutsy game five.”

Against Wis.-Superior, Clayberg noted the offensive attack. Golly notched two ace serves and 15 kills. Right-side hitter Kiley Meyers (senior, Grundy Center) had 11 kills and four blocks. In her first varsity action, freshman middle hitter Hannah Welter (Lincoln Neb., Southwest HS) recorded six kills and three blocks.

“We got to play a lot of players, which was nice,” said Clayberg. “We were moving really well. The offense was running efficiently.”

Grieger had another 32 digs, giving her a season total of 692 . She will look to top Central’s single season mark of 698 set by Callie Collins (2003) when Wis.-La Crosse Invitational action continues Saturday.

Central (20-10, 5-3 conference) faces conference foe Buena Vista University at 10 a.m. and host Wis.-La Crosse at 2 p.m. The Beavers hold a 9-21, 0-6 conference record and were winless in Friday’s action. The Eagles are 7-18 and defeated Buena Vista and Loras Friday.
