Central captures runner-up honors in surprising tennis run

CEDAR RAPIDS—Second place feels pretty good for a freshman women’s tennis doubles team that had never played together before this weekend.

Central College’s Anna Striegel (Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) and Emily Koontz (Council Bluffs, Abraham Lincoln) were paired together in the last minute at the Iowa Conference individual tournament. The duo made an impressive run, claiming runner-up honors in Flight B doubles.

Striegel and Koontz were eliminated by the seventh seeds, Laura Reutlinger and Adriana DePaolis of Luther, 8-3. Earlier, in the semifinal match, Central ousted eighth-seeded Est Mungai and Caroline Rainey of Loras, 8-3. The duo knocked off a fifth-seeded Loras duo and fourth-seeded Buena Vista pair Friday night.

“It’s a great win for two freshmen,” coach Steve Tyler said. “It should give them both a lot of confidence in their tennis game.”

The tournament wraps up Central’s fall season. The Dutch compiled a 6-9 dual record.
