30 Iowa Conference titles
ELK RIVER, MINN.—Central College jumped two spots to snag a share of sixth place after two rounds of the 54-hole Twin Cities Classic men’s golf tournament Sunday.
The Dutch carded 304 on the par-72 Elk River Golf Club after a 310 Saturday at the Links of Northfork. Central is tied for sixth place with Nebraska Wesleyan (319-295—614). No. 19 Wis.-Eau Claire took over first place at 298-295—593 while Saturday’s leader, Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.), is tied for second (294-306—600) with Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) (307-293—600).
“Elk River is an unchallenging course that players can score low on,” coach Chad Green said. “We’ve had to keep an 80 or higher our last three tournament rounds. We’re missing that fourth score to set us apart from other teams.”
Brent Goodenow (senior, Johnston), who was tied for 38th Saturday, is tied for ninth at 78-72—150. Justin Livingston (junior, Winterset) is tied for 18th at 75-77—152 with Desmond Stoll (freshman, Lockport, N.Y.) tied for 39th at 81-75—156, Matt Vegter (senior, Morrison, Ill.) tied for 48th at 76-81—157 and Brent Messmore (senior, Hudson) tied for 67th at 81-80—161. Competing as an individual, David Watson (freshman, San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS) is tied for 55th at 79-80—159.
“Brent (Goodenow) and Desmond shot well today,” Green said. “Brent shot even par and Desmond was two-under after nine holes but had some trouble on the back nine. Justin finished strong. After shooting six-over on the front nine he shot one-under on the back.”
Monday’s final round is played at the Rush Creek Golf Club at Maple Grove, Minn. The par-72 has hosted three LPGA Tour events and the 2004 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
“We’ve never played there before and from what I’ve heard, it will be a challenging track,” Green said.
Meanwhile, Central’s White and Black squads competed Sunday in the Waldorf Invitational at the Bear Creek Golf Club at Forest City. The Black team won the team title and Adam Squires (freshman, Waterloo, Columbus HS) took runner-up honors with 73. Clayton Curwin (freshman, Faribault, Minn., Shattuck St. Mary’s HS) tied for third with 74.
