RAMSEY, MINN. — The Central College men’s golf team is tied for eighth in a strong 18-team field after day one of the Twin Cities Golf Classic Saturday.

Central and No. 3-ranked St. John’s (Minn.) each shot 310.

Justin Livingston (junior, Winterset) led the Dutch with a three-over 75 at the Links of Northfork and is tied for 10th in the individual standings. Following were Matt Vetger (senior, Morrison Ill.) at 76 and Brent Goodenow (senior Johnston) at 78. Brent Messmore (senior, Hudson) and Desmond Stoll (freshman, Lockport N.Y.) each carded 81.

Freshman David Watson (San Diego, Calif., Patrick Henry HS) competed as an individual, recording a 79.

Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) fired a 294 for a 4-stroke lead over No. 19-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire. St. John’s B team is third at 300 and No. 14 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) is tied for fifth at 307.

“You don’t win tournaments on the first day, but you can lose them,” said coach Chad Green. “We should have kept ourselves in it today.”

The three-day tournament continues Sunday at Elk River Country Club in Elk River, Minn.

“Elk River is a totally different style course than we saw today,” said Green. “It’s definitely scoreable though. We’ll look for more consistency.”
