18 top-three league team finishes in past 31 years
CEDAR RAPIDS — The Central College women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat to Simpson College Saturday in the Iowa Conference team tournament fifth-place match.
Coming off a winless day against Wartburg Friday, the Dutch pushed three matches into tie-breaking sets, but were unable to come away with wins in any. Central had defeated Simpson 5-4 at Pella Sept. 27.
“It’s very difficult to lose three tie-breakers and win the match,” said coach Steve Tyler.
In doubles play, seniors Emily Swartz (Eldora, South Hardin HS) and Kayla Donner (Metamora Ill., Metamora Township HS) took their match 8-3 at the No. 1 spot but the No. 2 duo of Ashlei Bos (freshman, Weatherby Lake Mo., Park Hill HS) and Riley Taylor (senior, Tama, South Tama HS) lost 8-2.
At No. 3, freshmen Sarah Montgomery (Bettendorf) and Jordan Langer (Verona Wis.) lost the first tiebreaker of the night 9-8 (7-2).
“That was a hard loss,” said Tyler. “The match determined who took the 2-1 advantage into singles play.”
In the No. 5 spot, Taylor recorded the lone singles win for the Dutch, notching a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
With three singles wins, Simpson (8-7) clinched the team victory and the remaining matches were called.
Saturday was the season’s final dual meet for the Dutch, who finish the 2011 campaign with a 6-9 record. The squad will be in action Oct. 14-15 for the Iowa Conference individual tournament in Cedar Rapids.
