Three NCAA Div. III national titles
OSKALOOSA—The Central College volleyball team had its chances but the Dutch couldn’t close the deal and suffered a 27-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18 non-conference defeat against William Penn Thursday night.
Central (16-5) rallied from deficits in both the first and third sets, but made errors at costly times to end its momentum. The Dutch missed a serve at game point in the opening set and had a rotation error at 24-24 in the third set.
Three players recorded double-digit terminations for a balanced Central offense. Right-side hitter Caitlin Kouba (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had a match-high 16 kills, including a perfect 7-for-7 in the first set. Middle hitter Kiley Meyers (senior, Grundy Center) had 12 kills and outside hitter Amy Golly (senior, Ankeny) had 10.
Setter Maggie Snyder (senior, Alexandria, Minn., Jefferson HS) logged 36 assists and freshman Jill Schildroth (setter, Reinbeck, Gladbrook-Reinbeck HS) had 11. Right-side hitter Sam Retz (junior, Atkins, Benton HS) had four blocks. Libero Chelsea Grieger (senior, Pella) tallied a match-best 32 digs while Snyder posted her 38th career double-double with 15 digs. Defensive specialist Liz Sanders (senior, Clive, Valley HS) had a career-best 11 digs.
William Penn (12-12) held a 7-4 block advantage and the Dutch recorded nine service errors for the second straight outing. The Dutch hit .141 as a team while William Penn was at .162.
Central is out of action until Tuesday, when the Dutch travel to Dubuque for an Iowa Conference matchup with Loras College at 7:30 p.m. Central defeated the Duhawks 31-33, 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 in its home tournament Oct. 1, but Loras swept the Dutch 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 in last season’s league meeting. Loras is 8-13 overall and 3-2 against conference opponents.
