Central races to men’s tennis victory over Simpson

INDIANOLA—The Central College men’s tennis team toppled Simpson College 8-1 Wednesday in its second and final dual match of the non-traditional fall season.

With four freshmen in the lineup, the Dutch set the tone early and swept the doubles portion of the contest.

“We had three matches under our belt right away,” coach Steve Tyler said. “It’s always helpful to have the momentum going into singles.”

Senior Seth Harris (Waverly, Neb.) claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles, a highlight of the match according to Tyler.

“Simpson has a nice No. 2 player,” Tyler said. “But Seth played steady and had control the entire match.”

Freshman Austin Papenthien (Waunakee, Wis., Edgewood HS) almost captured the shut out for Central, but lost in a 7-2 tiebreaker after splitting 6-3, 7-6 at No. 1 singles.

Tyler is encouraged by what he saw in the abbreviated season.

“Up and down the lineup everybody played well,” Tyler said. “Fall is a quick season and I really can’t wait for second semester and the main part of the men’s season to roll around. I think we'll be pretty steady.”
