Men's golf | Sept. 24, 2011

GALENA, ILL. — The Central College men’s golf team put itself among the leaders after day one at the University of Dubuque Bishops Buffet Invitational Saturday.

The Red squad is tied for third with St. Ambrose University in the 28-team race, recording a 297. Viterbo University (Wis.) leads with 295 and Wis.-Stout is second at 296. Iowa Conference rival Dubuque is ninth at 311, Simpson is 17th at 327 and Loras is 18th at 331.

“We’re glad to get a strong start at this tournament,” said coach Chad Green. “This is probably the biggest field we’ll see this fall.”

Seniors Brent Goodenow (Johnston) and Matt Vegter (Morrison Ill., Morrison HS) as well as Desmond Stoll (freshman, Lockport N.Y., Lockport HS) all recorded a 74 at the Eagle Ridge Resort and are tied for 15th place. Brent Messmore (senior, Hudson) shot 75 and Justin Livingston (junior, Winterset) carded a 76.

“They all played impressive rounds,” said Green. “A couple of them were under par on the back nine.”

Green also commended his White squad. Playing a man down due to injury, the foursome recorded a 303. Senior Travis Havens (Belmond, Belmond-Klemme HS) led all Dutch shooters with a 73. CJ Gaston (senior, Keosauqua, Van Buren HS) and Adam Squires (freshman, Waterloo, Columbus HS) were close behind with 74 and 75, respectively, while Jacob Anderson (sophomore, Treynor) had 81.

“We did what we had to do today,” said Green. “We put ourselves in contention. We’ll be in a good position tomorrow.”

The 36-hole tournament concludes Sunday.
