Eight Iowa Conference championships
PELLA — Central College scored its first women’s golf tournament victory of the season, claiming the five-team Central Invitational Saturday.
Sarah Paulson (senior, Ottumwa) coasted to a 5-shot victory in the medalist race with 83-77—160 at the par-72 Bos Landen Golf Club. Central shot 347-335—682 in the 36-hole tournament. Grinnell followed at 352-341—693 with Simpson at 366-363—7239, Coe at 377-392—769 and Knox (Ill.) at 485-482—967.
Ashley Smith (junior, Johnsburg, Ill.) was fifth with 86-84—170, Ali Miller (senior, Davenport, North HS) was sixth at 87-88—175, Kaurie Kincaid (junior, Knoxville) improved to seventh at 91-86—177 and Kelsey Van Tasell (freshman, Pella) shot 96-96—192.
The Dutch had three at-large competitors. Karissa Rempe (freshman, Pella) shot 110-99—209, Leah Hilpipre (freshman, Spirit Lake) had 106-109—215 and Christina Lee (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) had 114-108—222.
“We were able to count three scores in the 80s and a 77 which is nice,” coach Tim Wilkinson said. “That’s something we’ve been trying to accomplish for the entire season and to do it here at Bos, where the course is a little tougher, is something that I told the players to take a lot of pride in.”
The 72-hole Iowa Conference tournament tees off Friday and Saturday, with 36 holes at the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. It concludes with 36 holes Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Lake Creek Country Club at Storm Lake.
Defending champion Wartburg College is the tournament favorite. Central was second a year ago with Luther College third.
“The players are excited,” Wilkinson said. “They’re focused on making a good run at the conference title.”
