PELLA—Senior Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) snagged a share of second place to propel the Central College women’s golf team to a first-round lead at the Central Fall Invitational Friday.

The Dutch turned in a team score of 347 at the par-72 Bos Landen Golf Club. Grinnell is second at 352 and Simpson is third at 366. Central’s White team is fifth at 428.

“The conditions couldn’t have been better and to leave Bos Landen with a 347 is not bad,” coach Tim Wilkinson said. “But we struggled at times and had some big numbers. We left a lot of strokes out on the course.”

Paulson leads the Dutch at 83 and is tied with Simpson’s Jennifer Gaffney. Grinnell’s Mallory Messin sits atop of the 35-player field at 82.

Ashley Smith (senior, Johnsburg, Ill.) shot 86 and is fifth. Ali Miller (senior, Davenport, North HS) shares sixth at 87, Kaurie Kincaid (junior, Knoxville) is tied for 10th at 91 and Kelsey Van Tassell (freshman, Pella) is tied for 17th at 96.

“Ashley’s been working hard on playing consistent,” Wilkinson said. “She put a good number on and did well today.

“And Kelsey rebounded from a rough outing last weekend to shoot a pretty good score so we’re excited about her turnaround.”

For the White squad, Jessica Shiner (junior, Van Meter) is tied for 20th at 98 and Leah Hilpipre (freshman, Spirit Lake) is 27th at 106. Karissa Rempe (freshman, Pella) is 29th at 110 and Christina Lee (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) is 30th at 114.

The six-team, 36-hole invitational concludes Saturday.

“Our challenge is to be consistent hole-to-hole,” Wilkinson said. “We need to be focused on every shot."
