Slow, rainy start for men’s golf squad

Men's golf | Sept. 18, 2011

PEOSTA—Playing in less than favorable conditions, Central College senior Brent Messmore (senior, Hudson) fired an even-par 71 to lead the Dutch after the opening round of the 36-hole Clarke University Fall Classic Sunday.

The Dutch turned in a 310 at the Thunder Hills Country Club and Central’s White team, led by Messmore, carded 315.

“We played in steady rain all day,” coach Chad Green said. “It was tough conditions and it definitely got the better of us.”

Clarke and St. Ambrose Univ. sit atop the 11-team field with 298 and the Univ. of Dubuque is at 301. Complete team and individual standings were not yet available.

“We just didn’t have the fourth score we needed,” Green said. “That’s what hurt us.”

Justin Livingston (junior, Winterset) led the red squad at 73, followed by Desmond Stoll (freshman, Lockport, N.Y.) at 78 and Brent Goodenow (senior, Johnston) at 79. Drew Osier (junior, Austin, Minn.) shot 80 and Travis Havens (senior, Belmond, Belmond-Klemme HS) had 84.

On the second unit, Erik Grunder (junior, Wilton) shot 78 while Matt Vegter (senior, Morrison, Ill.) and Adam Squires (sophomore, Waterloo, Columbus HS) both had 83. Jacob Anderson (sophomore, Treynor) shot 84.

“We had a hard time keeping the big numbers of the scorecard, like last week,” Green said. “Messmore and Livingston didn’t have that problem, but if only two of 10 golfers do that it’s hard to put a good team score together.”

Monday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
