DUBUQUE — After struggling in the first three outings of the season, the Central College women’s tennis squad notched two convincing victories Saturday against Iowa Conference competition.

The Dutch handed Loras an 8-1 defeat and topped Dubuque 6-3.

Central had a strong showing in doubles play, dropping only one match all day. At number one doubles, Emily Swartz (senior, Eldora, South Hardin HS) and Kayla Donner (senior, Metamora Ill., Metamora Township HS) took a close match against Loras 8-6 and blanked the Dubuque duo 8-0.

Anna Striegel (Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Jefferson HS) teamed with fellow freshman Sarah Montgomery (Bettendorf, Bettendorf HS) to win both number three doubles matches, 8-3 versus Loras and 8-5 against Dubuque. At number two doubles, sophomore Riley Taylor (Tama, South Tama HS) and junior Chelsea Johnson (Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon HS) defeated the pair from Loras 8-0.

“We came out strong and played very well in doubles,” coach Steve Tyler said. “Getting two or three doubles wins creates such positive momentum for the rest of the match.”

It certainly did carry over into singles. Striegel maintained her dominance at number one singles, as she fought back against Loras 3-6, 6-3 (10-7) and won against Dubuque 6-4, 6-1. Ashley Bos (freshman, Weatherby Lake Mo., Park Hill HS) also won both of her singles matches in her first appearance at the number two spot.

“Ashley typically plays number four singles but moved up to the number two slot,” Tyler said. “She had a terrific comeback win against Dubuque.”

Central (2-3, 2-2 conference) returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Grinnell for a 4 p.m. match.

“I suspect Grinnell will be very good,” Tyler said. “But we have a better idea of the things we need to work on.”
