Women's tennis | April 2, 2011

PELLA—Central College junior Emily Swartz (Eldora, South Hardin HS) won a third-set tiebreaker to secure a 5-4 women’s tennis victory over Simpson College Saturday in Pella.

Swartz battled back from a 6-7 opening-set loss at No. 3 singles to defeat Simpson’s Allison Anderson 6-1 before taking the tiebreaker 1-0.

Central also got singles wins from Sara Dale (senior, Marshalltown) at No. 1, Stephanie Gibbons (senior, Ankeny) at No. 2 and Chelsea Johnson (sophomore, Mount Vernon) at No. 5.

Dale and Gibbons garnered the lone doubles win for the Dutch, claiming an 8-6 victory at the No. 1 spot. It is the pair’s first win of the spring and 11th victory of the 2010-11 season.

The Dutch, 12-9 overall with a 2-2 spring mark, finish their spring season Thursday, meeting Grinnell College at 4 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts. The Pioneers outlasted the Dutch 5-4 in the fall.
