Greiner drops opening match at wrestling championships

Wrestling | March 11, 2011

LA CROSSE (WIS.)--A first-period takedown gave freshman Mack Drees of Wis.-Platteville the one-point advantage to edge past Central College freshman Kalen Greiner (Keota) by a 3-2 decision in the opening match of the NCAA Division III wrestling championships Friday morning in La Crosse, Wis.

At 125 pounds, Greiner posted a one-point escape to Drees' takedown in the first period, but was held scoreless in the second period. Drees marked an escape in the second period and Greiner rebounded with an escape in the third, but Drees came out one point ahead.

Greiner drops to the consolation bracket and will face the loser of Max Cohen (17-8) from Ithaca College and second-seeded Mark Kist (28-6) of Wartburg College. Drees tackles top-seeeded Clayton Rush (31-1) of Coe College.

It was the third meeting between Drees (33-14) and Greiner (17-12). Drees topped Greiner in a 5-4 decision at the Knox College (Ill.) Invitational Nov. 13 before Greiner knocked off Drees by decision, 9-4, at the Chuck Porter Duals Jan. 8.
