No. 4 Coe blanks Central wrestlers

Wrestling | Nov. 17, 2010

PELLA—While progress is evident to coach Eric Van Kley, the young Central College wrestling team isn’t yet on even footing with No. 4-ranked Coe College, which blanked the Dutch 44-0 in the teams’ dual season opener Wednesday night.

The Kohawks, with five top-10 ranked wrestlers in the lineup, scored two falls and two technical falls in the decisive win.

“We did a decent job at some spots and we wrestled poorly at other spots,” Van Kley said. “The thing about teams like Coe is they’re going to continue to attack. We needed to match their intensity.”

Van Kley liked the effort shown by some of his young wrestlers.

“I was extremely proud of Jake Eischeid (sophomore, Waukee) at 125 and of Theron Stewart (sophomore, Marshalltown) at 197,” Van Kley said. “And Alex Wright (freshman, Wilton, Durant HS), who got called in late, really battled hard to the end.”

The Dutch are still without a few of their regulars.

“We’ve got some injuries but we’ve got to work through those,” Van Kley said. “We make no excuses. The guys we put out there we feel very confident in. Injuries are going to happen and we’ve got to do a better job of working through them. That’s on me.”

Central journeys to Minneapolis, Minn. for the Auggie-Brute-adidas Open at Augsburg College. There are no team scores in the meet, which breaks the field into divisions separated by experience levels.

“It will be a great chance to get all the guys back on the mat,” Van Kley said.
