Men's soccer | Oct. 26, 2010

PELLA, Iowa—Central College seniors Kurtis Brondyke (Clinton) and Brett McKenzie (Lindenhurst, Ill., Antioch HS) have received Iowa Conference player of the week recognition.

Brondyke, a punter and wide receiver for the Dutch football team, was named the league’s special teams player of the week. He averaged 48.4 yards on five punts in Central’s 27-6 victory over Loras College Saturday. Brondyke nailed an 86-yard punt in the third quarter, the second-longest boot in school history. The punt actually traveled further than 86 yards as it bounded through and beyond the end zone. It was two yards shy of the record 88-yard punt of Vern Boelkens in 1956.

Brondyke is averaging 43.1 yards per punt overall. He also handles the team’s kickoff chores and is averaging 58.9 yards.

A three-time first-team all-Iowa Conference pick, Brondyke received player of the week honors for the second time in football. He was also chosen Sept. 24, 2007. It’s the ninth time Brondyke has been cited overall. He’s received league performer of the week honors seven times in indoor and outdoor track and field.

Central is 7-1 and ranked No. 17 in the AFCA Division III rankings. The Dutch travel to Buena Vista Saturday.

McKenzie, a forward for the Central men’s soccer squad, starred in a pair of 3-0 victories over Simpson at Pella Wednesday and over Coe at Cedar Rapids Saturday. He scored one goal against Simpson and two more at Coe, giving him a team-high 11 for the season.

McKenzie is the conference scoring leader and also ranks first in shots (3.5) and in game-winning goals (5). He took over sole possession of third place on Central’s career scoring chart with 38. He’s fourth in school history in career points with 87 and second in career shots on goal with 113.

Central is 12-3 overall and travels to Dubuque to close the regular season Saturday, before beginning league tournament play next week.
