Central rolls past Simpson, Wartburg

PELLA—The Central College men's tennis squad improved to 7-3 Saturday,  sweeping Simpson College and Wartburg College Saturday at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. The Dutch downed Simpson 7-2 in the morning matches before rolling past Wartburg 8-1 in the afternoondespite playing without No. 3 singles player Chris Bliss (junior, Ottumwa) .

Jared Feddersen (junior, Fort Dodge) , Luke Boyd (freshman, Fort Dodge), Devin Bates (senior, Romeoville , Ill., Mattoon HS) and Tyler Cobb (senior, Humbolt, Ill., Mattoon HS) were 2-0 in singles.

In doubles action, the Dutch were 6-0 with victories from Feddersen and Boyd at No. 1, Justin Scherff (junior, Denison) and Joel Druvenga (so., Spencer) at No. 2 and Bates and Nick Rohner (junior, Wichita, Kan., Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS) at No. 3.

"Our seniors came through,” said coach Greg Gilmore. “Both Devin Bates and Tyler Cobb were outstanding today. We didn't have our full lineup but we had some guys really step up.”

In the day's other match Wartburg defeated Simpson 7-2. Simpson dipped to 2-5 while Wartburg is 1-1 after having its first four contests cancelled due to weather.

"It was a fantastic day,” Gilmore said. “I'm thrilled with how we played."
Gilmore has added a pair of spring break contests against NCAA Division II squads to the Dutch schedule. Central's next action will now be March 13 against 4-0 Washburn University (Kan.) at 2 p.m. in Topeka, Kan. Central travels to Emporia, Kan. March 14 for a 5:30 p.m. contest with Emporia State (Kan.).
