Central edges St. Ambrose 5-4; no Cornell match

MOLINE, ILL.—The Central College men’s tennis team improved its record to 5-3 and stopped a three-match losing streak with a 5-4 victory over St. Ambrose on Saturday.

Central tallied singles wins against St. Ambrose (3-4) from Jared Feddersen (junior, Fort Dodge) at No. 1, Justin Scherff (junior, Denison, Denison-Schleswig HS) at No. 4 and Devin Bates (senior, Romeoville , Ill. , Mattoon HS) at No. 6.

Feddersen teamed with Luke Boyd (freshman, Fort Dodge) to win at No. 1 doubles and Nick Rohner (junior, Wichita, Kan., Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS) joined Bates to win at No. 3 doubles.

“It was a tough one but we pulled it out,” coach Greg Gilmore said. “Justin Scherff played spectacularly well at No. 4 singles.”

The Dutch were scheduled to face Cornell in Cedar Rapids following their match against St. Ambrose but due to inclement weather the contest was cancelled.

Central returns home Saturday, taking on Simpson at 8:45 a.m. and Wartburg at 3 p.m. at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. Last year Central defeated Simpson 5-2 and Wartburg 7-0 during the regular season, and the Dutch were 4-0 victors against Wartburg in the Iowa Conference tournament third-place match.
