Ohnemus top placewinner at conference tournament

DUBUQUE — Andy Ohnemus (senior, Indianola, Southeast Warren HS) was the Central College wrestling team's top placewinner at the Iowa Conference Tournament Thursday.

After an initial first-round loss, Ohnemus fought his way into the fifth-place match and defeated third-seeded Luke Satern of Buena Vista 7-5, finishing the day 2-2.

Central placed ninth in the tournament with 32.5 points, an 11.5-point improvement over last year.. No. 1-ranked Wartburg took the team crown for the 15th straight year.

Ryan DeVriendt (senior, Sherrard, Ill.) wrapped up an injury-plagued season with a sixth-place finish, posting a 1-3 record on the day and closing with a 12-4 loss against Coe's Tyler Burkle in the fifth-place match. He became a four-time league placewinner, previously finishing eighth in 2004, fifth in 2005 and eighth in 2006.
