Wolf eighth for Central runners at Waverly

WAVERLY-Split squads were featured as the Central College men's and women's cross country teams raced in an unusual format at the Dan Huston Invitational Saturday.

The Dutch men were fourth out of six teams that competed for the overall crown which combined results from 4,000 and 8,000 meter races. Wartburg was first at 123 with Central at 382. Central was eighth of 12 teams at 4,000 meters with 191 points. Hamline (Minn.) won with 40. And the Dutch were sixth of 10 teams at 8,000 meters with 191 points. Wis.-Platteville took first with 36.

The Central women were sixth out of 16 teams in the 4,000-meter race but didn't compete in the 6,000-meter race. Wis.-Parkside took the 4,000-meter title with 57 points while Central had 173.

Central's Adam Wolf (senior, Corning) was eighth at 4,000 meters in 12:24. Brian Respeliers (senior, Council Bluffs , St. Albert HS) was 27th (12:56), Teddy Clark (sophomore, Montgomery , Ill. , Oswego HS) was 35th (13:07), Eric Sink (junior, Corning) was 59th (13:41), James Armstead (sophomore, Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) was 62nd (13:46), Cory Fitzsimmons (freshman, Pella) was 69th (14:07) and Tyler Keller (sophomore, Anna, Ill., Anna-Jonesboro HS) was 71st (14:13).

In the 8,000-meter race Joe Jefferson (senior, Decorah) topped the Central finishers, placing 18th (27:27). Brett Jones (senior, Knoxville) was 34th (28:22), Jaron Byrum (sophomore, Mount Union , New London HS) was 35th (28:27), Chase Ungs (senior, Ames, Gilbert HS) was 49th (29:38) and Andy Green (junior, Cherokee, Washington HS) was 55th (31:00).

Angie Berry (freshman, Indianola) crossed the line first for the Central women again, placing 13th (15:16). Jessica Clark (sophomore, Port Byron, Ill., Riverdale HS) was 24th (15:35), Amber Mayer (freshman, Essex, Shenandoah HS) was 39th (15:48), Leanne Townsend (senior, Bondurant, Perry HS) was 45th (16:08), Amy Ledvina (freshman, Toledo, South Tama HS) was 52nd (16:20), Kelsey Tompkins (freshman, Webster City) was 59th (16:33) and Jenni Hufford (freshman, Polk City, Ankeny HS) was 60th (16:36).

Central travels to La Crosse , Wis. for the Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational next Saturday. The Dutch men were 17th in a strong 23-team field there last year while the women were 18th of 22 teams. It's the final outing for Central prior to the Iowa Conference championship races at Iowa City Oct. 28.
