Dutch suffer setbacks at dual tourney

PELLA —Injuries continued to limit opportunities for success for the Central College wrestling team at Saturday's Central Duals.

The Dutch (0-12) had just five healthy wrestlers take the mat and they suffered setbacks to Augustana ( Ill. ) 41-9, William Penn 54-0 and Dubuque 57-0.  

Nick Johnson (freshman, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) pulled out a 7-6 victory against Augustana and Mark Trullinger (senior, Mount Ayr) returned to the lineup at 285 pounds and accepted a forfeit win.

“Psychologically, going in knowing we're going to forfeit five matches makes it tough,” coach Eric Reed said. “But I actually felt OK about the way we wrestled. Nick Johnson was 1-2 but wasn't that far from being 3-0, he just did one or two dumb things. Tyrone Callender (freshman, Clarksville , Tenn. , Kenwood HS) was kind of the same way.”

Jeremiah Teeple (sophomore, Lincoln , Neb. ) made his debut at 149 pounds. Teeple enrolled at Central for spring semester after being out of college for a few years. He was pinned in his only match but showed some promise, Reed said.

“He wrestled well in the first period but then you could just see him getting tired,” Reed said. “He hasn't been on the mat in five years and had only been at practice for four days, but he wanted to be out there, which is a good sign.”

It was the first action this year for Trullinger, who was at Central's study center in Merida , Yucatan , Mexico during fall semester.

The Dutch face a demanding week with matches against four nationally ranked Iowa Conference foes. Wednesday they travel to Waverly to tackle No. 2-ranked Wartburg College in a 7 p.m. dual meet at Waverly-Shell Rock High School . Next Saturday Central is home for the third straight weekend, playing host to the Iowa Conference Duals. The Dutch meet fourth-ranked Luther, 16th-rated Loras and 20th-rated Buena Vista .

Reed hopes to regain the services of Ryan DeVriendt (senior, Sherrard , Ill. ) at 149 pounds, Griffin Holden (freshman, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) at 165 and possibly Jess Welu (freshman, Dubuque, Hempstead HS) next week.
