13 NCAA Div. III individual championships
PELLA—The Central College men’s track and field team dropped two spots to No. 11 in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III indoor national poll.
The Dutch jumped seven spots to No. 9 last week after opening the season at No. 16, but were leapfrogged by MIT (Mass.) and Bates (Maine). The two schools were ranked Nos. 11 and 10, respectively, in the previous poll.
Central’s junior multi-eventer Eric Larson (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and senior distance runner Austin O’Brien (Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) swept the Iowa Conference men’s indoor track and field weekly awards after leading the team to a third-place finish at the Wartburg Select. Larson scored 5,271 points to win the heptathlon, the best mark by a Division III athlete this season, while O’Brien won the 3,000-meter run and finished runner-up in the mile.
The top four remained unchanged, led by 2013 indoor national champion Wis.-La Crosse. Wis.-Eau Claire, Mount Union and Wis.-Whitewater held at Nos. 2, 3 and 4, while North Central (Ill.) moved up two spots to No. 5. Haverford (Pa.) is No. 6, followed by Wis.-Oshkosh and Monmouth (Ill.) at Nos. 7 and 8. Wartburg remains the only other league school in the top 25, but dropped five spots to No. 19.
Central continues its seven straight weekends of indoor competition Saturday at the Grinnell Darren Young Classic.
