Central's Samson on football all-America squad

Football | Dec. 20, 2013

PELLA— In yet another national honor, Central College defensive end Danny Samson (senior, Baxter, CMB HS) was named to the all-America squad Friday evening in Salem, Va., site of the NCAA Division III championship game, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

Samson, a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award as the top small College defensive football player in the country, was a first-team selection.

He is the 32nd football all-America honoree in Central history and the first Dutch player cited since 2010.

Samson is in Mexico where he and teammate Travis Hook (senior, Grundy Center) were named co-captains for Team Stars and Stripes, a Division III all-star squad that will compete in the Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) Saturday afternoon. The team will take on a squad of standouts from a national conference of Mexican private colleges at Estadio Tecnologico in Monterrey, Mexico on the Tec de Monterrey campus.

The Iowa Conference football defensive MVP, Samson led the league with 11.5 sacks over 10 games for 73 yards and was first in tackles for loss with 21 for 96 yards. He also tied for second in fumbles recovered with two and recorded three of Central’s 11 blocked kicks—the second-most blocks by a Division III team. Samson was twice named to the team of the week (Oct. 2, Oct. 23) and tabbed conference defensive player of the week (Sept. 29, Oct. 20).
