14 Iowa Conference team titles
CEDAR RAPIDS—Outlasted by Wartburg College for the second time in four days, the Central College men’s tennis team was dealt a fourth-place finish at the Iowa Conference tournament Saturday.
The Dutch, who have captured 23 top-four finishes in the past 24 years, opened with a 5-1 defeat to second-seeded Luther College (14-9) Saturday morning. Third-seeded Central was then overpowered by fifth-seeded Wartburg (14-10) in the third-place match, 5-1. The Knights also defeated the Dutch Tuesday, 5-4.
“Luther took the wind out of our sails and we just ran out of energy on the court,” coach Steve Tyler said.
No. 1 doubles tandem West Adelman (freshman, Geneva, Ill.) and Kyle Freischlag (junior, Downers Grove, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) secured Central’s lone win against the Norse at 8-3. The Dutch held leads in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches before falling 8-4 in both.
“West and Kyle played lights out at the top of the doubles lineup,” coach Steve Tyler said. “We battled at the other spots but couldn’t hang on.”
Against Wartburg, Josh Forst (Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) and Zane Hendricks (junior, Fort Dodge) collected Central’s win at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
Central closes the year at 13-8, the most wins since 2009. The squad graduates two seniors, Pat Daly (Shawnee, Kan., Shawnee Mission NW HS) and David Bouska (Altoona, Southeast Polk HS), and return seven of eight of its top players.
“We’re young and return our top five singles players and all of our doubles players,” Tyler said. “We have a great attitude and work ethic on this team, expect us to be stronger next year.”
