Horton cracks another track and field record in California

Men's track | April 20, 2013

WALNUT, CALF.—Central College standout Eli Horton (sophomore, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) continued the barrage on the Dutch track and field record books Friday evening with a dazzling performance in the 5,000 meters at the Mount SAC Relays in California.

Horton crossed the line in 14 minutes, 12.4 seconds, demolishing his school record of 14:33.77 set earlier this season. That mark currently places him atop the Division III performance list and was good for second in his heat of 32 competitors comprised primarily of Division I competition. It is also a mere five seconds from a top-10 all-time Division III performance in that event.

“Eli ran an extremely smart race,” said coach Joe Dunham. “The thing that I am most pleased with was his ability to run within the pack and keep his composure. Eli is a front runner and likes to lead races. He stayed back in about tenth places for most of the race and had a great finish.”

Horton and the rest of the Dutch track and field squad will return to action next week at the Drake Relays from Wednesday through Saturday and Simpson Kip Janvrin Invitational Thursday and Friday.
