Wrestling | Feb. 14, 2013

PELLA—Central College’s upset over a ranked opponent has pushed the Dutch back into the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll at No. 28.

The Dutch scored three falls to knock off then 23rd-ranked Luther 22-21 Feb. 2. Central rolled past Simpson Feb. 1, 41-6, and took sixth place in the Iowa Conference team standings after a narrow 20-18 defeat to Loras at the league dual finals Feb. 8.

Central climbed as high as No. 14 in December, the best standing since the 1991-92 squad reached No. 5, before dropping out of the poll at the end of January.

Wartburg (19-0) continues to reign at No. 1 after capturing its 21st consecutive league crown. Coe (13-6) holds steady at No. 14, Luther (10-8) inched up one spot to No. 22, Dubuque (10-8) jumped two spots to No. 24 and Loras (10-12) vaulted into the poll at No. 25.

The Dutch are back on the mat March 2 at the Central Regional hosted by Loras at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque. The regional includes the eight league schools, as well as No. 30 Cornell (5-5), previously ranked Augustana (Ill.) (14-5) and Knox (Ill.) (0-5). The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the national meet March 15-16 at Cedar Rapids.
