Seven national top-10 team finishes
DUBUQUE—After a six-dual win streak, the No. 15 Central College wrestling squad couldn’t pull out the win against Loras College Thursday night, losing 27-14.
“Overall we came out flat,” said coach Eric Van Kley. “I’m not sure why, but it definitely wasn’t our normal selves. We are normally the aggressors and we had it taken to us from top to bottom.”
The Dutch (7-2 overall, 1-1 Iowa Conference) mustered three victories over the Duhawks (5-8 overall, 1-0 conference). Daniel Page (sophomore, Yelm, Wash., Tumwater HS) won by a forfeit at 125 pounds. At 149 pounds, Ryan Davis (senior, Shreveport, La., Northwood HS) earned a major decision, 15-7. Joseph Atwell (senior, Jamaica, Panorama HS) scored the last Dutch win 19-8 major decision 157 pounds. Theron Stewart (senior, Marshalltown) narrowly lost in two overtime periods, 4-2.
“Davis and Atwell were really the bright spots for us on the night,” Van Kley said. “Going ahead in the future we need to do a better job going into the duals as individuals and as a team.”
Central jumps right back into action on Saturday hosting the Central Invitational at 9 a.m at the P.H. Kuyper Fieldhouse in Pella.
