Football | Dec. 15, 2012

GUADALAJARA, MEXICO--Central defensive coordinator Don De Waard won his head coaching debut as Team Stars and Stripes, a squad of 48 players from 28 Division III colleges, defeated a Mexican all-star team 32-15 in the Tazon de Estrellas Saturday.

Central linebacker Seth Carson (Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS), Ben Lechtenberg (Manchester, West Delaware HS), a 6-5, 225-pound wide receiver, Andrew Weaks (Fulton, Ill.), a 6-2, 220-pound linebacker and all-Iowa Conference honorable mention pick Colton Smith (Kearney, Mo.), a 5-10, 255-pound offensive lineman participated. The four seniors are part of a 48-man squad that includes players from 28 Division III colleges.

Carson had a first-half quarterback sack that was followed two plays later by a blocked punt that gave the U.S. squad a safety and a 12-0 lead. Complete statistics were not available.

"It was a fabulous week and it had a good ending with a solid win," De Waard said. "The keys were the first half turnovers and the blocked kick for a safety. But we also did a great job of taking care of the ball and by not giving up any big plays. That's how you win football games no matter if you are in the USA or in Mexico. I'm very proud of how our guys represented themselves all week."
