Seven national top-10 team finishes
MILWAUKEE, WIS.—Capturing its first team championship since the 2009-10 season, the Central College wrestling team battled its way to victory at the 11-team Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Invitational Saturday.
Central took home its last team championship at the same invitational three years ago and has placed second the past two years at the MSOE tournament.
“We had a great day,” said coach Eric Van Kley. “We had seven wrestlers in the finals and captured that championship. The guys were really excited.”
An all-around effort was the key to a Dutch victory. Aaron Anderson (freshman, Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS) was the individual champion at 133 pounds, TJ Peretti (junior, Auburn, Wash., Mountainview HS) was the champion at 141 pounds and Jake Crawford (senior, Monroe, Southeast Polk HS) came out on top at 285 pounds.
“All three wrestlers were pretty dominant all day,” Van Kley said. “They were very offensive which is what we like to see.”
Daniel Page (sophomore, Yelm, Wash., Tumwater HS) at 125 pounds, Ryan Davis (senior, Shreveport, La., Northwood HS) at 149, Joseph Atwell (senior, Jamaica, Panorama HS) at 153 and Tyler Lowy (sophomore, Phoenix, Ariz., Thunderbird HS) at 184 were all finalists, rounding out the Dutch victory.
The Dutch scored 156 points, edging the competition by more than 50 points. Second-place Wis.-Oshkosh had 98 points and Concordia (Wis.) had 97.5.
“The biggest thing we are proud of is our depth in the lineup,” said Van Kley. “All 10 of our wrestlers won a lot of matches. This is a big step for our program.”
Central returns to action with duals against Knox (Ill.) and Augustana (Ill.) in Rock Island, Ill. on Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m.
