Central men’s golf team sixth at top-ranked tourney

Men's golf | Oct. 8, 2012

OGLETHORPE, GA.—Justin Livingston (senior, Winterset) fired 2-over-par to place ninth after the first round of the loaded men’s golf Oglethorpe/Royal Lakes Fall Championship Monday at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club.

Central tabbed a 303 while facing five of the top 10 ranked teams in the Golfstat men's head-to-head rankings, including the host, No. 4 Oglethorpe. The tournament also features No. 1-ranked Cal Lutheran (Calif.) as well as No. 2 Methodist (N.C.) and No. 10 Emory (Ga.). Central is tied for sixth with No. 5 Southwestern (Texas) in the 15-team field. Methodist has the lead with 292.

Livingston shot 73 on the day. Just one stroke behind, freshman Jared Nepomuceno (Carona, Calif., Santiago HS) hit 74 and is tied for 12th.

“Overall, we didn’t play great, but we did alright,” said coach Chad Green. “I am very pleased with how Justin (Livingston) and Jared (Nepomeceno) played today.”

Desmond Stoll (sophomore, Lockport, N.Y.) and Adam Squires (sophomore, Waterloo, Columbus HS) are both tied for 38th shooting 78. David Watson had 82 and is tied for 73rd.

“Adam (Squires) had a tremendous front nine with 33, but dropped off on the back,” Green said. “Jared (Nepocmuceno) was just the opposite with a great back nine of 34. Tomorrow we need to go out and put the two together with solid front and back scores.”

Green is optimistic about Tuesday’s conclusion of the 36-hole tournament.

“We had a lot of positives today, and tomorrow we need to just let the scores come to us,” said Green. “We are only worried about how we play, and if we swing like we know how, we have a great shot.”
