Paulson leads Central women’s golf squad in Illinois

Women's golf | March 31, 2012

MADISON, ILL. — Central College’s Sarah Paulson (senior, Ottumwa) opened with a 78, leading the women’s golf squad at the 18-team Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) Invitational Saturday in Madison, Ill.

The Dutch shot a team score of 334 on the par-72 Gateway National Golf Links. Complete standings were not available.

“We shot below our average which is good for not having played the course before,” coach Tim Wilkinson said. “Our golfers felt like they played OK but left some shots on the course.”

Following Paulson, Taylor Hill (freshman, Treynor) and Ali Miller (senior, Davenport, North HS) shot 84. Ashley Smith (junior, Johnsburg, Ill.) carded 87 and Kelsey Van Tasell (freshman, Pella) shot 92.

“We had some trouble with the greens early on,” Wilkinson said. “The goal for tomorrow is to feel more comfortable on the course and more confident with the shots we have to hit.”

Wilkinson said the tourney field is loaded.

“The competition is second to none,” he said. “There are some good (NCAA) Division II teams, two of the top five Division III teams and some good NAIA schools. It’s a very good tournament.”

The 36-hole invitational concludes Sunday at 9 a.m.
