Wartburg avenges early loss to Dutch

Women's basketball | Jan. 30, 2010

Cory Bacon PELLA—It was a painfully familiar scenario for the Central College women’s basketball team Saturday as yet another slow start led to an 85-60 loss to Wartburg College.

The Dutch had scored their only league win at Wartburg Dec. 5 72-67. But Saturday Wartburg jumped to a 14-2 lead in a little more than five minutes before Central regained its bearings. The Dutch shot an icy 21.9 percent from the field in the first half and 29.0 percent for the game in dropping to 2-18 overall and 1-10 in league play.

Wartburg (15-5 overall, 9-2 conference) hit 41.7 percent and placed four players in double figures. The Knights, who were up at the break 45-24, outrebounded Central 48-46.

Central forward Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) had 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Center Andrea Clark (junior, Guthrie Center) also had six boards in limited action. Guard/forward Katie McKim (junior, Creston) and Aimee Delpierre (sophomore, Chariton) had nine points.

Central travels to Dubuque Wednesday for a league doubleheader. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. with the men’s game at 8 p.m. The Spartans, who were idle Saturday, defeated Central at Pella Jan. 6, 89-75. They’re 11-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
