1993 NCAA Div. III champions
PELLA—A steady second-half showing wasn’t nearly enough as the Central College women’s basketball team was outshot by Buena Vista 93-73 Wednesday.
Forward Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) posted a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds to go with four steals and three blocks for the Dutch.
Central (2-17 overall, 1-9 Iowa Conference) dug a 56-30 first-half hole but regained its footing after intermission.
Buena Vista (11-8 overall, 4-5 conference) shot 55.6 percent from the field in the first half and 51.6 percent for the game. Margo Muhlbauer, the league’s top scorer, went off for 39 points for the Beavers.
“We just didn’t play very good defense the first half,” coach Jerry Nikkel said. “We gave them so many easy shots.”
Trailing by as many as 32 points early in the second half, Central clawed to within 15, outscoring the Beavers 34-18 at one point.
“We were more aggressive in the second half,” Nikkel said. “We got our running game going. We just have to find that early in the game. We let the game get away from us so early.”
A telltale sign of improvement was Central’s turnover total, a source of frustration in recent weeks. After committing 13 turnovers in the first half, Central had just four in the second half.
The Dutch placed four players in double figures. Forward AJ Baker (sophomore, Grinnell) scored 12 points while guard Jordan Waddell (junior, Guthrie Center) had 11 and guard/forward Kelsey Schuring (sophomore, Pella) had 10 with seven rebounds.
Central was outrebounded 44-41.
Central plays host to Wartburg in a league doubleheader Saturday. The women’s game tips off at 2 p.m. in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium with the men’s game at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1). The Dutch were victorious at Wartburg Dec. 5, 72-67. Wartburg is 8-2 in the league and 14-5 overall after a 79-61 win over Dubuque Wednesday night.
