Schuring hits 18 but Dutch fall

Kelsey SchuringPELLA—Guard-forward Kelsey Schuring (sophomore, Pella) had 18 points but it was an otherwise tough shooting night for the Central College women’s basketball team in an 81-64 loss to Luther College Saturday.    

Schuring also had five rebounds, three steals and two assists. But the Dutch (2-14 overall, 1-6 Iowa Conference) committed 29 turnovers and shot 37.1 percent from the floor.

Luther (7-8 overall, 2-4 conference) placed four players in double figures and hit 49.0 percent. The Norse, who raced to a 41-28 halftime lead, also had a huge advantage at the free throw line, knocking down 27 of 33. Central was 10 of 18.

Alyssa SchwartzCentral held the rebounding edge, 41-34. Forward Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) had a game-high nine rebounds. Forward AJ Baker (sophomore, Grinnell) and guard Katie McKim (junior, Creston) each had nine points.

Central squares off with Loras College Wednesday at Dubuque in a league doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. The men’s game follows at 8 p.m. Loras is 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference after a 73-58 victory over Cornell Saturday. Before meeting Central the Duhawks are at Coe Monday night.
